Whimsical, Informative New Book Offers Insights into Dog Behavior

/Nevada News Articles/ - CARSON CITY, Nev. – The saying goes, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” but perhaps dogs can teach their owners a thing or two. At least Hank the dog, star of the new book, Happy Tails: Hilarious Helpful Hints for Dog Owners (now available through AuthorHouse), by Dr. Gary L. Ailes, DVM and Joy Underhill, thinks he can.
Told from Hank’s point of view, the book illustrates his life with his owners, Ron and Terri. Through his precocious adventures, he teaches readers a few new tricks to help straighten out that delinquent dog. Ailes and Underhill take readers through Hank’s memories to provide plenty of useful tips on how to handle a variety of training and behavioral problems with the family pet. With insightful humor, the authors take a walk inside the canine mind to show people how to care for their dog’s health and general well-being.
“Dog owners want to know what their dog’s behaviors mean and understand them. Dogs are not human, but they want to please their owners and most people. The owners’ job is to figure out what his actions mean, understand that some of it is just typical of dogs and offer gentle but firm guidance toward good behavior,” the authors write.
Through sections such as “Dastardly Dog Deeds,” “If Men are from Mars, Are Dogs from Pluto?” and “Going Mobile!” the book offers “a rib-tickling look at why we both love and are puzzled by our four-footed friends.” Most miscreant canine behavior is covered here. From why dogs prefer Prada heels over their rubber toys to why they always go for the grossest garbage cans on the street to the reasons they insist on sniffing the nether regions of humans and animals, Ailes and Underhill offer an interpretation to enlighten pet owners and aid in creating better-behaved barking buddies.
Filled with hilarious cartoons and Hank’s intuitive explanations, Happy Tails turns the subjects of canine training, care and behavior into a comedic tour de force.
Ailes is a veterinarian and the past president and currently a member of the Nevada State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. A member of a number of veterinary societies and associations, he performs such surgical procedures as total hip replacements and triple pelvic Osteotomy.
Underhill is a widely published freelance writer. Her poems have also appeared in several anthologies. When not writing humor, she nurtures her writing career.
