TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM & MIDBAR KODESH TEMPLE Of LAS VEGAS LEAD COMMUNITY-WIDE SELICHOT SERVICE
5th Annual Selichot Under the Stars Pays Tribute to Anniversary of 9/11 and Offers Prayers for Israel

/Nevada News Articles/ - LAS VEGAS, NV, September 08, 2006 - Beginning just after Shabbat, the week before Rosh Hashanah, congregations all over the country will celebrate Selichot...reciting prayers of forgiveness that signal the start of Judaism's most sacred High Holy Days.

Traditionally, Selichot (the Hebrew word for forgiveness) starts late at night, the Saturday before Rosh Hashanah; continuing before dawn, each day, until the New Year. It is a solemn and fitting preparation for ten days of reflection and self-examination.

For the past five years, Temple Beth Sholom in Summerlin, and Midbar Kodesh Temple in Henderson, have joined together to celebrate Selichot Under the Stars. Last year, over 400 attendees from all around the Las Vegas Valley participated in an outdoor celebration at Green Valley Ranch. This year, the joint Selichot service will be held on Saturday, September 16th, 8:30 pm at Bruce Trent Park, 8851 Vegas Dr. (89128)
in Summerlin.

Rabbi Felipe Goodman and Rabbi Jeremy Wiederhorn, along with Cantors Daniel Friedman and Andres Kornworcel, will lead the moving musical prayer service to inspire attendees in preparation for the coming High Holy Days.

"Celebrating outdoors, under the stars, enhances the spirituality of Selichot," comments Rabbi Felipe Goodman. "We want people to feel moved... feel their Judaism. Selichot opens our souls, and prepares us for the High Holy Days... and the new year ahead."

"Arrival of the High Holy Days can elicit certain emotions.... People are drawn to synagogue, feeling a little bit closer to God at this time of the year," adds Rabbi Jeremy Wiederhorn.

Both Rabbis Goodman and Wiederhorn look forward to building the tradition of community-wide, joint services for years ahead. Temple Beth Sholom and Midbar Kodesh Temple welcome all who would like to take part in this very special Selichot Under The Stars.

A special prayer service will pay tribute to the victims of 9/11. This event is free, and open to the public.
