Pet Food Drive Challenge Feeding Pets of the Homeless
- Feeding Pets of the Homeless, a national nonprofit, has challenged its member collection sites to work towards a goal of collecting 75,000 pounds of pet food by the end of the year.

CARSON CITY, NV, July 08, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- - Feeding Pets of the Homeless, a national nonprofit, has challenged its member collection sites to work towards a goal of collecting 75,000 pounds of pet food by the end of the year. The pet food is distributed through local food banks, food pantries, homeless shelters, as well as Meals on Wheels in local communities across the nation.

Last year, the organization's member/volunteer collection sites reported that they collected over 37,500 pounds of pet food for companion pets of the homeless and less fortunate.

"Each week food bank and homeless shelter managers call or email us asking for our help by requesting pet food for their clients," said Genevieve Frederick, executive director. "We have seen the need for pet food increase due to these troubling times in our economy. Animal shelters are overcrowded with people who cannot afford to keep and feed their pets. The numbers of homeless on the streets are increasing. Many of those folks will not give up the only companion they have and love. Their bond is unbreakable."

Many homeless and poor have benefited from free clinics that provide a basic check up, vaccines, medicines, flea and tick treatments, spay or neuter, along with pet food and other pet products. These clinics are made possible through grants to licensed veterinarians from Feeding Pets of the Homeless and the generosity of many of the veterinarian's distributors who donate products. Grants are made with donations from the public.
